"Everything was unchanged..."

"I hope you want nothing? You'll get nothing." That Miss Havisham.

I'm reading Great Expectations right now. Dickens frustrates me at times because I find him excessively wordy at times, but I must admit that he's an impressive storyteller.

My question to you: Why does Pip love Estella and not Biddy? What is it about Estealla's beauty, coldness and cruelty that attracts Pip? I like Biddy.

He IS an idiot. But they do ultimately end up together.

But it's also because Estella was a cold-blooded, trained assassin of men's hearts. She was like Miss Havisham's 007 agent that she brought up to exact revenge on all MAN-kind.

While she was cruel and cold to Pip, she always gave out that small glimmer of hope (of ultimate affection? her true character? both?) to him. And, while that could've been due to the fact that she was a trained assassin, maybe Pip was holding onto the hope that she really was better. And it turns out that in the end, Pip is proven right. But I don't think it was worth all the torture he had to go through.

He did have Biddy in front of him the whole time. And he could've saved himself a lot of trouble by deciding to marry her instead (which he does towards the end, although it's too late). But like I said, Estella was a trained assassin; Pip didn't stand much of a chance. It doesn't make him any less of an idiot though... Maybe he has this odd, seemingly non-sensical need to try to fix Estella (ring any bells Grace?)...and she does end up getting fixed through much well-deserved suffering...

I liked the message and themes, and if you were to judge how the story would go by that, you would expect (maybe even Greatly Expect...) the story to be better...eh...or more enjoyable. This novel, with an inadequete English teacher, turned out to be torture for me.

A Tale of Two Cities was better.

But yeah...He's an idiot.

And who's this first anonymous? She seems to have a bit of Estella in her...
