Blackbird singing in the dead of night;
Take these broken wings and learn to fly;
All your life,
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

I just don't get it -
- the right to bear arms.

I understand why you don't get it. Just from a purely historical basis...The right to bear arms, the 2nd amendment, was put in place to help the colonies defend themselves from the British or another attempt to take away the rights of the people by the government. Because there was no standing army, the government relied on a volunteer army to supply its defenses. Now you ask...Why does that pertain to today? Well, the right to bear arms right now is very relevant because the toothpaste is out of the tube. Meaning its very hard to take away the guns when they're all over the place. If the government banned all guns from here on out who would be in line to the gun collectors? The people that received their guns in a legal, civil manner. The people that won't. Well you probably guessed...the people that are illegally carrying guns aka the criminals that shoot people. People kill people, guns make it easier for cowards to do so. It sucks...I have a classmate that has two people from his graduating class that have perished. I'm just a couple of desks away from an affected person of this event. I can see why guns suck. This post is really long. So I will end it with this. What would have happened if a Christian stood up and gave this guy a second of his time showed him that he was cared for and loved. This would be a different situation all together. Virginia Tech would not be a house-hold name and the most famous alumni would be Michael Vick (if you don't know him its okay).
Right, as Johny "Future History Channel Expert" Kim, indicated, the right to bear arms was put in place to help us defend ourselves. Because the U.S. couldn't afford to buy guns and weapons for everyone, it was much more cost-effective to have everyone keep and bring their own guns to the shootouts. But now, since our taxes provide more than sufficient funding for our military and its weapons (and the corporations that are closely tied with both of them...), there is no real urgent need for arming citizens (no minutemen necessary...do they even exist anymore? even as a little club of old guys??).
My solution? I say just switch the place of two little letters in the Constitution (c'mon, does that really count as "altering" or "amending"??). The right to BARE arms would also acknowledge the right of people to keep cool in hot weather (or just BEAR arms, under a different meaning...there's a funny t-shirt depicting this).
As for Johny's point about a Christian (or anyone, for that matter) truly reaching out to this dude...yeah, that probably would have been all it took. But how many people actually would do that? Actually care enough to reach out to someone like that?? I bet at least one kid like this (who exhibits similar outward behavior and appearances as described of Cho by his classmates) are in half the classrooms of virtually every educational institute in the U.S....and will probably continue to exist like that even after this, as unfortunate as that is...
I think that, UP TO A CERTAIN LEVEL, many of us share some of the disappointment in people that Cho expressed (of course, going on a crazed personal killing rampage probably shows that you have no right to be disappointed/angry with people in the first place)...and I don't know if there will be any fewer reasons for that disappointment even after this incident. Remember Columbine? Most people can recall it just fine...and look at all the stuff that's happened since despite that (I know ALL the stuff that's happened since isn't applicable, but you get the picture...).
Forgive me if I seem cynical...I do believe that things could change significantly and we, collectively, have the potential to do so as well...yeah...
Anywho, thanks for the soap-box you provided us with this short, little entry.

Everyone should have a right to bear arms. But I prefer the human ones.
Oh you are one funny cousin =)
