Two Tuesday Thoughts

  • Anthony Minghella died. I liked The Talented Mr. Ripley. But more than that, he impressed me with his direction of Puccini's Madame Butterfly in London. I was lucky enough to see this production in 2005. I sat... actually, I stood in this corner in the last "row" of the theatre because tickets were so expensive and that's the ticket I could afford. . It was basically the farthest spot from the stage, but it didn't really matter to me because I really wanted to see it. The opera moved me so; it was absolutely breathtaking.
  • I heart Obama. If you didn't get a chance to watch/read/hear his speech today, please do so.

Question: How do you relieve stress?
Darren (Mon's boy BFF): I have to run. It's like an addiction.
Me: I think I feel happier after pilates or yoga.
Mon: I find that HD Television does it for me.

Obama's powerful eloquence always impresses me. And while I think he is clearly the candidate who's "the best of the rest," I refuse to give him a free pass for everything.

There are just too many holes and inconsistencies. At first, he said he never heard any comments like the ones his pastor said. Then in this speech a couple days later, he says that he's heard similar comments many times before and overlooked it for 20-plus years because Wright was "family." I can't personally believe that Rev. Wright hasn't said, in Obama's words, similarly "incendiary, "wrong," "divisive," and "controversial" comments in his previous 20 years of his pastorhood. And I personally can't see (at least right now) how Obama would be able to stand all those previous comments that are in the same vein as the comments he has condemned so strongly this past week.

Now...I agree it's not that big of a deal and will probably vote for Obama in November. But c'mon...I think the Obama-worship is getting out of hand.

P.S. Mon's statement was pretty hilarious

P.P.S. I was assigned to watch and recap a PBS production of Madame Butterfly (aired last week) over spring break for one of my classes. Seeing as I don't have a T.V., I've been searching for it online. My professor absolutely loves that opera/play.
